. . . i remember . . .

. . . knock knock . . .
. . . who's there? . . .
. . . 9/11 . . .
. . . 9/11 who? . . .
. . . you said you'd never forget . . .

. . . i heard that "joke" on the radio this morning
and it got me thinking . . .

i remember:
  • waking my family that morning just in time to watch on the morning news as the second tower was hit
  • feeling like i'd been slugged in the stomach
  • a lovely evening spent dining with great family and friends at the "windows on the world" restaurant two years earlier
  • thinking, "oh my goodness, drew was there less than a month ago" on his national boy scout jamboree trip
  • panicking because my brother worked in one of the towers {i was unaware that his offices had recently moved to rockefeller center, thank heaven}
  • the summer of 1993 visiting that brother at his then world trade center office and walking to lunch past the site of the recent garage car bombing, which was still surrounded by yellow warning tape
  • driving 16 hours to fort collins, colorado to attend our newly married daughter's wedding open house - our flight, along with all others, had been grounded
  • listening to the car radio - non-stop - for any news of why? who? how could this have happened?
  • immediately buying and flying an american flag daily for a long time
. . . i hope i never forget . . .

Amen! Although I knew the gravity of the situation, I couldn't believe how strict they were at LAX when we flew to Tahiti just 2 weeks after this happened & they took away my tweezers.

I remember it was the second morning in a row that I had been woken up by my mom telling me bad news - the morning before was the church being set on fire AGAIN. Aaron said in Brazil they knew very little of what happened but that the Americans became very singled out and watched very closely.

The images of that morning are hard to forget. I remember thinking "Is this a Hollywood movie?" but no such luck. Air travel has certainly changed since then.

What a morning! I have always found it interesting to hear what people remember from that day as it made such an impact in so many lives. I am so glad that your brother's office was moved & that Drew was home from NY... wild!

My Dad & I were both in the air (he to LA & me to UT). He made it to LA, but I was grounded in Las Vegas. I remember being quite scared! I just simply can't imagine being on the actual flights & what those brave men & women must have felt! I pray for their families always!

Thanks for writing this! I, too, hope I never forget!
