. . . sowing some oats . . .

. . . i'm a little tardy for this party . . .
. . . and even though
they say
it's really good for you . . .
. . . i've never liked oatmeal . . .
. . . especially the instant variety . . .
. . . double yuck/slimy . . .

. . . now, steel cut oats . . .
. . . they're a whole different animal . . .
. . . such nutty, chewy deliciousness . . .
. . . love 'em! . . .

. . . the thing is . . .
. . . they do take a while to cook . . .
. . . however long it takes
to boil the water . . .
. . . plus thirty minutes more . . .
. . . so ~ a little planning ahead
is required . . .
. . . i usually start them
right after a shower . . .
. . . then by the time
i've finished hair/makeup . . .
. . . they're hot and ready . . .
. . . just add a splash of milk,
a little brown sugar,
and/or fresh berries,
peanut butter,
craisins,
pecans etc . . .
. . . a real stick-to-your-ribs breakfast . . .
. . . the formula: use four times
as much water as oats
and don't forget to add
a pinch of kosher salt . . .

. . . have you tried steel cut oats? . . .

{i'm investigating the overnight crockpot method.
if you're cooking for a crowd, this will work great.
i, on the other hand, would need a smaller crockpot}

We are fans of steel cut oats at our house too! Yum-O amd waaaaay better than instant oats, for sure. Totally worth the extra cooking time.

I am a big fan. I buy the Coach's brand at Costco or Sams...can't remember which ... in the yellow zip up bag. There is a formula on the bag for microwaving them. I believe it's 4 mins at 70% power. The only trick is...I have to use a HUGE bowl because if I don't they go all over the microwave...which we all know is a great way to start off the day in a BAD mood. Since I'm not a morning person anyway...I prefer to use the big bowl. But then there's lots of room for a few chopped pecans, some brown sugar...and if I'm really daring, about 2T. of 1/2 and 1/2...and I thought I was eating healthy!!! Michelle says, that's basically dessert for breakfast. I guess she's right. There goes my girlish figure (AGAIN!)
